Wenlock Olympian Society
June 18, 2010
Baron de Coubertin the founder of the modern Olympics was inspired by Dr William Brookes who ran annual Olympic Games in the village of Much Wenlock in Shropshire from 1850 onwards (note: the 2012 Olympic mascots Wenlock and Mandeville take their names from the founding places of the Olympic and the Paralympic games). The Wenlock Olympian Games have continued on and off for the last 150 years. The website reports that the 124th games run from 9th-12th July this year which happens to coincide with a trip I am making, so I might have to pay them a visit.
