Great Expectations

October 26, 2010

The World Service are currently broadcasting a series of programmes made by Nina Robinson about how the games are effecting life on an estate in Hackney. As part of their surrounding coverage they have posted an article by Francesca Panetta a Guardian Journalist and creator of an the award winning Hackney Podcast. She reflects on her experiences of talking to people in Hackney about the Olympics over the past couple of years and concludes ‘It’s an expensive business, the Olympics, and our borough is still unsure as to whether it will be worth the price.’ She includes the amazing statistic that just 125 people out of 6,277 people working on the Olympic park construction site live in Hackney – that’s a tiny 2% ( I think these figures come from an ODA ’employment and skills update’ from last December which also state that 20% of people working on the Olympic site are from the host boroughs – while a further 53% are from the wider London area).
